This is not good
It is actually pretty FUBAR:
Let’s review. We have:
- The head of the FBI’s national security branch
- The Vice Chairman of the House Intelligence subcommittee on technical and tactical intelligence.
- The Chairwoman of the House Intelligence subcommittee charged with overseeing the C.I.A.’s recruiting efforts in the Islamic world
And they each know less — probably much less — about the most critical religious divide in the Middle East (the same one that is currently getting U.S. soldiers killed at the rate of about three a day) than your average commentator at Little Green Footballs.
I was about to say you can’t expect to run an even half-way functional empire this way, but I suspect this is actually how most of them have been run, most of the time. In all fairness to Messrs. Hulon and Everett and to Ms. Davis, they’re hardly the first group of state functionaries to flunk the strange-habits-and-customs-of-the-foreigners pop quiz.
Go read the whole thing.
